Third V35A engine recall adds 43,566 model-year 2024 Tundras, with repairs estimated for 2027

Models Tundra Vehicles 43,566

Toyota has added 43,566 model-year 2024 Tundra pickups, built from February 7, 2024 to August 5, 2024, to its recalls for debris inside the V35A engine. The new recall, 26V-320, follows 24V-381 and 25V-767, which cover 2022-2024 Tundras, Lexus LX models and the 2024 Lexus GX. Debris from the manufacturing process may cause a main bearing to fail, which can stall the engine. Dealers will inspect the bearing and replace the engine if needed, free of charge, but Toyota estimates the repair will open for these trucks between June and September 2027. Owners can check their VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

What is wrong

Toyota’s Part 573 reports say “engine machining debris of a particular size and amount may not have been cleared from the engine during manufacturing.” Given the pressure this engine configuration puts on the main bearings, debris that sticks to a bearing can make it fail if the engine keeps running at higher loads over time. Results can include knocking, rough running, a no-start or a stall; a stall while driving cuts motive power, which at higher speeds “can increase the risk of a crash.” Toyota says it cannot estimate how many vehicles actually contain the defect.

Three recalls, one defect

24V-381, filed May 30, 2024, covers 102,092 vehicles: 2022-2023 Tundras built November 2, 2021 to February 13, 2023, and 2022-2023 Lexus LX600 models. Dealers replace the engine assembly with a new one. Owner letters went out between December 17, 2024 and February 19, 2025, the NHTSA record says.

25V-767, filed November 6, 2025, covers engines built after that period: 113,079 Tundras, 9,895 Lexus LX and 3,717 2024 Lexus GX, or 126,691 in all. Toyota’s dealer notice says the population includes about 30 Tundras that had been repaired with affected service part engines. Its report said some later engines built with improved manufacturing processes “remain under investigation.”

Follow-up work led to 26V-320, filed May 20, 2026. Teardowns of field engines completed in early May 2026 found the same bearing wear pattern seen in the two earlier recalls. As of May 13, 2026, Toyota counted 30 field technical reports and 360 warranty claims from U.S. sources that “relate or may relate” to the condition.

The fix

Under 25V-767 and 26V-320, dealers use inspection software to evaluate the #1 main bearing and collect available drive data. If the software “cannot confirm that the bearing will be free from abnormal wear,” the dealer replaces the engine. Toyota’s owner letter says the inspection takes about 2 hours, and a replacement engine takes 3 to 8 days to arrive and about 2 working days to install, with a loaner provided. Toyota’s dealer FAQ says the inspection needs no engine teardown and that an oil analysis cannot substitute for it.

What is pending

The 25V-767 and 26V-320 remedy is rolling out in nine phases, generally by vehicle age, with letters sent as each opens. The NHTSA record says owner letters were mailed August 28, 2026. Phase 2, about 13,000 trucks, launched September 17, 2026. Phases 3 through 6 are estimated from December 2026 to April 2027, and phases 7 through 9, the 2024 trucks in 26V-320, for June, August and September 2027. Toyota calls those dates “subject to change.”

For 24V-381, the newest dealer notice in NHTSA’s file, from September 18, 2025, launched phase 5 and still listed phases 6 and 7, about 13,000 and 14,000 trucks built mid-August 2022 to mid-February 2023, as “TBD.” The documents give no later date. Some later engines received an improved main bearing, and Toyota says it “continues to monitor the effectiveness of this improvement.”

What to do

  • Enter your 17-digit VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see whether 24V-381, 25V-767 or 26V-320 is open on your vehicle.
  • If your truck is in 25V-767 or 26V-320 and its phase is open, book the free #1 main bearing inspection with a Toyota dealer. It takes about 2 hours, and if the engine has to be replaced the dealer orders one and provides a loaner.
  • If the engine knocks, runs rough or will not start before your phase opens, contact a Toyota dealer, as Toyota's dealer notice advises.
  • Owners of 2024 Tundras in 26V-320 were sent interim letters July 23, 2026, and Toyota says more letters will follow once the remedy is available. Toyota customer service is 1-800-331-4331.
