TRAC OFF and Check Engine Light on a Toyota Corolla: Causes & Fixes
Fix it
- Pull the code
Plug an OBD2 scanner into the port under the dash. The stored code names the system at fault.
- Check the gas cap
Loose or cracked cap sets an EVAP code — the cheapest, most common trigger. Re-seat or replace it.
- Fix what the code points to
Sensor, coil/plug, or EVAP part. Don't replace parts before reading the code.
- Clear it
TRAC OFF goes out with the check engine light. If TRAC OFF stays on with no engine code, look at wheel-speed sensors.

On a Corolla, traction control (TRAC) and stability control (VSC) run off the same computer that manages the engine. Store a powertrain code — the same fault that lights the check engine light — and that computer switches TRAC and VSC off as a fail-safe. The traction hardware is usually fine; TRAC OFF is a symptom of whatever set the check engine light.
The trigger is almost always one of: a loose or failed gas cap (cheap EVAP fault), an engine misfire (flashing light = active), a failing oxygen or air-fuel sensor, or a throttle/pedal sensor that ties straight into traction control. Read the code first — it tells you which.
Keep trips short until it’s fixed: traction and stability assist are off, so leave more room on wet or loose surfaces. The overview guide covers other models: TRAC OFF on a Toyota.
