TRAC OFF and Check Engine Light on a Toyota: What It Means
Fix it
- Scan for the code
An OBD2 reader points to the system at fault. Read before you replace anything.
- Check the gas cap and battery
A loose cap sets an EVAP code; a weak battery or recent disconnect can trigger it too.
- Repair what the code shows
Sensor, coil/plug, or EVAP component — whatever the code names.
- Clear it
TRAC OFF normally goes out with the check engine light. If TRAC OFF stays on with no engine code, look at wheel-speed sensors.

Traction control (TRAC) and stability control (VSC) run off the same computer that manages the engine. Store a powertrain code — the fault that lights the check engine light — and that computer switches TRAC and VSC off as a fail-safe, lighting TRAC OFF. The traction system itself is usually fine; TRAC OFF is a symptom of whatever set the check engine light.
The trigger is usually a loose or failed gas cap (cheap EVAP fault), an engine misfire (flashing light = active), a failing oxygen or air-fuel sensor, or a throttle/pedal sensor that ties into traction control. Read the code — it names the one.
Short trips are fine; just remember traction and stability assist are off, so leave more room in rain or snow. A flashing light is the exception — that’s an active misfire, so keep speed and load low.
Model help: Corolla, Tacoma, and RAV4. If the VSC light is on with it, see TRAC OFF and the VSC light; if the light won’t clear after a repair, see TRAC OFF that won’t turn off.
